Six towns, one yard

Tool & plant hire
Stoke-on-Trent

Diggers, dumpers and tools from the Etruria yard, collected or delivered across all six towns.

Micro and mini diggers, dumpers, breakers, wacker plates, cement mixers, saws and generators, hired by the day, the weekend or for as long as the job runs. All of it is parked at our yard on Brick Kiln Lane in Etruria rather than ordered in, so if it’s available when you ring, you can have it.

Being in Etruria puts us in the middle of the six towns rather than at one end of them, so a job in Tunstall and a job in Longton are the same run out. Collect on your way to site if you can carry or tow it, or give us the postcode and we will bring it.

Tell us the job rather than the machine. Most hires that go wrong go wrong because the wrong size turned up for the access, and that is a two minute conversation before you book instead of an argument on the morning.

Worth knowing locally

What actually catches
people out here

01

Terraced access is the constant problem

Much of the older housing across the six towns is terraced or tightly packed semis, and the route to the back garden is a passage between two houses rather than a driveway. That is why the micro digger at 700mm across the tracks gets hired more than anything else we own. Measure the narrowest point before you book, and remember the soil pipe on the passage wall counts.

02

The ground is rarely what you expect

Two centuries of pottery, mining and marl pits mean a lot of Stoke sits on made ground, and it is common to find rubble, ash or old foundations a spit down where you expected clay. Worth allowing for when you are working out how much you are shifting, and a good argument for having a dumper on site rather than a wheelbarrow and optimism.

03

Clay holds water

Where it is not made ground it is usually clay, which turns to soup after a wet week and stays that way. Tracked machines spread the load and mark a lawn far less than wheels, but if you are working a garden after heavy rain, board the route out before you start rather than after you have rutted it.

04

Water sits where the canal and the marl holes were

The Trent and Mersey runs right through Etruria and Middleport, and there are filled marl holes and old clay pits scattered across the city that nobody marks on anything. Ground near either tends to hold water well below the surface. If a trench keeps filling faster than you can dig it, that is what a pump is for, and it is a lot less grief to have one on site than to spend a day bailing.

05

Think about where the machine sits overnight

On a multi-day hire in a terrace you need somewhere it can stand that is not the pavement and not blocking the entry. Worth sorting before delivery day rather than at half seven in the morning with a dumper on the back of a trailer. Same goes for where the spoil goes and whether a grab lorry can reach it.

Getting it to you

Collect from Brick Kiln Lane on your way to site if you have something that can legally carry or tow it, and check your licence covers the trailer. We hire plant trailers if you need one. Otherwise tell us the postcode and the access when you book and we will run it out.

Asked most often

Hiring in Stoke-on-Trent,
answered

Where is the yard in Stoke-on-Trent?

Brick Kiln Lane in Etruria, ST4 7BS, a couple of minutes off the A500. It is central to all six towns rather than out on the edge of the city.

Do you deliver across Stoke-on-Trent?

Yes. Give us the postcode and the site access when you book and we will sort delivery. If you would rather collect, the yard is open from half seven.

What fits down a terraced passage?

The micro digger is 700mm across the tracks, which clears a standard 900mm timber side gate with room either side. Measure the whole route rather than just the gate, because meter boxes and soil pipes are usually the real pinch point.

Can I hire for a single day?

Yes. A day, a weekend or longer. Ring when the job is done and we will off hire it from that point rather than from whenever you get it back to us.
